Spring Has Arrived — Time to Repot Your Bonsai

After the coldest winter in over a decade, spring has finally arrived — and with it, the ideal time for one of the most important tasks in bonsai care: repotting.

Each year, we speak with bonsai enthusiasts who hesitate to repot their trees out of fear that doing so might harm or even kill them. While it's true that improper repotting can stress a tree, when done correctly and at the right time of year, repotting promotes healthy growth and longevity.

At Maple Leaf Bonsai, we repot over 200 trees annually. Our success is grounded in a few essential principles:

  • Repot during the optimal season (now!)

  • Avoid removing excessive root mass

  • Provide attentive aftercare

By following these fundamentals, your trees should recover beautifully and flourish in the growing season ahead.

If you're unsure when or how to repot — or whether your tree even needs it — we encourage you to attend one of our hands-on repotting workshops. These sessions are designed to build your confidence and equip you with the skills needed to repot with care and precision.
